Viver em um território que tenha em seu subsolo grandes reservas de ouro pode parecer uma benção e um sinônimo de riqueza. Infelizmente, para os Yanomami, esta situação tem sido a sua maior maldição. Um estudo recente conduzido pela Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), em parceria com o Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), mostra que a contínua invasão ilegal de garimpeiros em seu território tem trazido graves consequências: algumas aldeias chegam a ter 92% das pessoas examinadas contaminadas por mercúrio.
